REACTIVATING ACTIVISM
RECOGNIZE - REFINE - RETAIN
DETROIT Minds and Hearts is currently directed and administered by Ammerah Saidi, Khadigah Alasry, Amany Killawi, and Issra Killawi, appointed to reflect and represent the youth perspective within the development of the program as well as carry the program out. This initiative is a movement-building project, a part of the Muslim American Society (MAS), a national collective working towards social justice through the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Khadigah Alasry - Finance
Khadigah Alasry is a teacher of Integrated Sciences in Hamtramck, Michigan. She graduated with a BS in Elementary Education in 2008. Her involvement in community organizing with MAS Youth Detroit began in 2007. Through this work, she contributed to projects including Voices For Change, Now What? (a townhall addressing youth concerns), and several local MAS initiatives.
Ammerah Saidi - Program Development
Ammerah Saidi graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a B.A. in English and Psychology certified as a secondary teacher. For 4 years, Ammerah taught in Detroit, Michigan, for one year in Al Hada, Saudi Arabia at an international school, and 1 year in Dearborn Public Schools. She recently graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Education with a Masters in School Leadership and is currently teaching in a unique charter school for design and innovation in Detroit, Michigan. In her free time, she works as an ally supporting youth organize around issues of social justice.
Amany Killawi - Outreach
Amany Killawi is a Social Work Student at Wayne State University. Her interests include playing sports, reading, self development/self improvement, camping with family and friends, community service, trying new things, and meeting and connecting with people. She can be reached at [email protected]
Issra Killawi - Documentation/Evaluation
Issra Killawi is a sophomore at Star International Academy. She enjoys hanging with her family and friends, gardening, crafts, painting, and any hands on activity that involves creating something. She also loves to read.
